The Craylands School Maths

Maths Curriculum at The Craylands School

Our maths curriculum at The Craylands School is designed to build a strong foundation in calculation, nurture critical thinking through reasoning and develop practical problem-solving abilities.

Our goal is to ensure that every child develops a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, equipping them with essential skills in fluency, reasoning and problem-solving. These foundational skills are important for academic success and future life.

Numeracy Building Strong Foundations

Across all year groups at The Craylands School, our numeracy curriculum is carefully structured to build progressively on key mathematical skills. In the early years, children focus on counting, recognising, understanding and using numbers and solving simple addition and subtraction problems, whilst also exploring shape, space and measures.

Years 1 & 2

As students move into Year 1 and Year 2, they deepen their understanding of counting, partitioning and calculating, whilst also securing number facts, exploring shapes and beginning to handle data and measures.

Years 3 & 4

In Years 3 and 4, students continue to build on these foundations by further developing their skills in calculating, measuring and understanding shapes, along with handling more complex data. They also work on identifying mathematical relationships and securing their number facts.

Years 5 & 6

By Years 5 and 6, students refine these skills with a strong emphasis on mastering calculations, understanding geometric concepts and confidently handling data, whilst preparing for the transition to more advanced mathematical concepts in secondary education.

Development

Children are provided with opportunities to enhance their skills in counting, understanding and applying numbers, solving basic addition and subtraction problems, and exploring shapes, spaces and measures.
